FEAR Has Two Meanings

I found this quote and it really resonated with me. “FEAR has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run OR Face Everything And Rise…The choice is yours.” I choose “Face Everything and Rise.”

I was just speaking to a client about a book she’s reading, called “The Myth of Freedom and the Way of Meditation”. The idea is that there are thoughts and preconceptions that limit us. I’d like to speak to the way that we limit ourselves through our negative and limiting “self-talk”.

Have you ever found yourself thinking about your flaws? Are you looking in the mirror and seeing only the lines and wrinkles? Do you judge your body negatively? Do you feel self-conscious and then make it worse by thinking about how bad you are at the activity you are trying?

I’m guilty of it from time to time. But as I told this client, if I listened to that negative voice, I wouldn’t be doing this for a living. Certainly, I couldn’t teach classes in front of people! Because I, like you, am not perfect. I have flaws and foibles, make mistakes and stumble. But you know what? I dust myself off, shake off those feelings of inadequacy and replace them with power.

Power, you say? Why yes…you push the negative thought to the side and replace it with determination. You decide what you want and you go for it. You laugh off the awkward moments and move forward with grace. And you can do it, too! There is no reason to limit yourself because of insecurity because we ALL feel insecure. Even the people around you that look perfect are NOT perfect. They pretend better than others, perhaps, but they are just like the rest of us.

So the next time you find yourself speaking unkindly to yourself, STOP! Turn that around and give yourself some encouragement. Turn on the determination. Then just do it!
