Twenty years ago Laury Christian Post was the middle car in a three car accident. “I was the meat in the sandwich so to speak.” The accident herniated the discs in her cervical spine at the 5th & 6th vertebrae, with compression at the 7th. A cervical fusion/discectomy was performed by a Neurosurgeon not long after the accident. For years she looked for exercise programs that would keep her neck healthy without causing re-injury.
How I Found Reformer Pilates
Pilates matwork is very challenging to a fit body on a good day, let alone an injured one. Where I lived no one heard of Pilates mat or reformers. Fifteen years ago I took my first mat class. I was the only one in the class. The instructor pulled out her book, “Pilates for Dummies” and started reading it to me. Looking back, I think we were both the dummies. Poor instructor, her first and only student with a fused cervical spine and she had no idea what that was! And there was me, trying to do things she asked with a compromised stiff cervical spine. What a pair! “You don’t know, what you don’t know”. FYI…there is a lot to know. For example, the head weighs roughly 8-12 pounds. When you have cervical spine strain or injuries it’s not that easy to lift your head off the mat. Did I mention I was in the worst shape of my life with “flabs” and zero core strength?
Benefits of the Pilates Reformer
This is where a Pilates reformer would have benefited me greatly. In my opinion, the reformer prepares the body and mind for the Pilates Matwork Repertoire. The reformer was originally used to break down the flowing movements of the matwork to strengthen the individual and get them to a level to which they can do the matwork effectively with control.
What is Reformer Pilates?
The Pilates reformer has a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulley’s. Most reformers have 5 springs and when combined add up to considerable resistance. To decrease resistance we use fewer and lighter springs depending on exercise and muscles being worked. At first glance looking at the reformer you might feel the urge to flee to the closest exit door! They tend to look intimidating and medieval. I promise you nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is after 5 private sessions on the reformer you won’t be able to live without it! You will see—and better than that “feel”—the benefits. So, please give “both” of us the opportunity to work with you!
